What if Target Operated Like a Church?

‘Tis the season to shop for Christmas gifts, so I recently made a trip to Target. I love Target because I don’t have to spend a lot of money, and I avoid going to Wal-Mart.

After spending a little bit of time in the store, it struck me how different Target is from most churches I’ve visited in the past. That led me to wondering how Target would be different if it operated like the typical church. So, with that in mind,

here’s my initial list: What if Target Operated Like a Church?

•Instead of having men’s and women’s clothing departments, they would be called clever names like Impact and Embrace that are completely meaningless to new shoppers.

•Each department in the store would have its own logo to go with their clever name. And, of course, all those logos would be different than the logo on the front of the store.

•The workers in each department would all have their own t-shirts and flyers to promote what’s available in their departments. The youth clothing department would, of course, have the best flyers.

•The store manager and his wife would be pictured on the front page of the website.

•You wouldn’t actually be able to buy anything from the website, but each department would have its own page explaining why they are such a great department and the the information would be several months out-of-date.

•If you are in the shoe department and have a question about flashlights, the shoe department employee has no idea how to help you because it doesn’t have anything to do with shoes.

•Shoppers would be able to start their own departments so that they can buy the items that they want to buy. Don’t worry…that means there will certainly be a clothing department for singles.

•Shoppers would also be able to appoint their own store manager and then serve on committees and boards to tell the store manager what to do.

•The store would only be open one day a week between 9:00 a.m. and noon and on the first Wednesday evening of every month.

Hope this makes you laugh. (Kym and I did.) And, maybe it also challenges some preconceived notions. After all, churches are sort of notorious for worshiping methods and traditions whether or not they actually produce results.

What would you add to the list?

9 Things That I Sometimes Forge

Here is a list of things that I so easily forget sometimes…from Pastor Perry Noble perrynoble.com

#1 – Jesus loves His church more than I do…so any “freaking out” that I do is totally not necessary!

#2 – The same God who allowed the storm I am going through will also see me through it.

#3 – The results in ministry are NOT up to me!

#4 – Success in ministry will not be measured by how big my church is…but rather by whether or not my wife and little boy really love me when this thing is over! I can always get another church…but I can NEVER get another Kym or Kaden.

#5 – Clear communication prevents unnecessary frustration…I can’t assume people know what I know, so it IS necessary to take the 2-3 extra minutes and fully explain what I am trying to say.

#6 – Eternity IS reality! Every single person I see is someone who WILL spend eternity somewhere…and I need to embrace that fact with urgency! (See Romans 10:14 and Romans 10:17)

#7 – Being busy doesn’t equal being godly!

#8 – Sometimes fighting the good fight means walking away from certain fights!

#9 – The same power that brought Jesus back from the dead is living inside of me…and IN HIM I can do ANYTHING that He commands me to do! (Philippians 4:13!)

The Church I dream of

  • That the ministry goes beyond the walls of the building and actually IMPACTS the community in a radical way.
  • Where the broken, hurting and lost are received with open arms…and the religious are challenged to repent of their “perfection.”
  • Where generosity is embraced.
  • Where the staff and volunteers give their best to God in every task that they take on!  (I don’t believe the church should look to organization like Disney and Apple for inspiration…I believe they should be looking at the church!!!  Yes, they have great thinkers…we have the HOLY SPIRIT of the LIVING GOD!  There is no excuse for half hearted, watered down effort in the Kingdom!)
  • Where JESUS is exalted…NOT a denomination or a political party.
  • Where Scripture, not Robert’s Rules of Order, govern the Body.
  • Where people in the church REFUSE to ignore injustice…and EMBRACE that God has called the church to do more about it than simply pray…but rather to DIVE IN and do all we can to help all we can.
  • That refuses to accept that the way things are is the way they have to be.
  • That champions the next generation instead of teaching them they are insignificant until they can get a job and begin to tithe.
  • That excitement and passion surrounds the Sunday services…and also an expectation that God is going to do something huge!
  • That throws the desire to compete with other churches out the window…and does all that they can to help the body.
  • That embraces the fact that Jesus originally called “unschooled, ordinary men” to change the world…and He’s STILL doing the same thing today. (See Acts 4:13)

7 Things That Leaders Should Never Apologize For

I regularly check this blog out by pastor “Perry Noble” pastor of New Spring church in SC. A few weeks ago I came across this blog post that I want to post for you today… I found this blog after I was handed one of His post by a man @ lunch and  when I got back to the office I immediately found perry nobles blog! you can check his site out @ http://www.perrynoble.com/

    • #1 – Never Apologize For Dreaming Big!

We have a HUGE GOD who can do things that are absolutely MIND BLOWING…and if we focus on HIS POWER rather than our limitations we will always be willing to hear what He says and then do it…even though we don’t have all of our questions answered.

He’s God…He wants more for the church than we want for it…ask big!

    • #2 – Never Apologize For Your Passion!

I once had a guy tell me, “Dude, I think you would be more effective as a leader/communicator if you would just calm down a little.”

Here’s the problem…I can’t!  Jeremiah 20:9 is my verse…Jesus began a fire inside of me on…and it’s only gotten hotter.

You can be consumed with passion…or be content with being passive.  One Jesus will use to change the world…the other the enemy will use to dull your soul.

    • #3 – Never Apologize For Wanting To Lead!

If you are called by God & gifted by God to lead…THEN LEAD!  Here’s the deal…someone is going to make the decisions.  Someone is going to call the shots…and if that is the call that God has put on your life then DO IT!

BTW…when you do this it IS going to make people mad.  AND…if you can’t handle the fact that people ARE going to hate you simply because you try your best to listen to Jesus and then do what He says…you may not be called to lead!

    • #4 – Never Apologize For Not Embracing Someone Else’s Agenda!

You have got to understand that, as a leader, if you experience any level of success then other people will always want to attach themselves and their agenda to you.  I often tell people, “your burden is not my passion!”

As a leader we are responsible for embracing God’s vision for our lives…not everyone else’s!

I am not saying everyone else’s idea is bad…or even wrong…it’s just that you can’t embrace something that God didn’t truly birth inside of you…and doing so will only lead to personal frustration and your organization trying to manufacture energy for something that they hate!

    • #5 – Never Apologize For Expecting The Best From Others!

Leaders cannot be afraid to set high standards…EVER!  I believe it is WRONG to expect perfection from others…we’re all humans, we screw up!  BUT…it isn’t wrong to expect others to give their best.  (BTW…MOST of the time if people see the leader giving their best it will inspire them to do the same!)

    • #6 – Never Apologize For Wanting To Reach More People!

From time to time people will take a shot at me for wanting to see more people come to church…and…

    I AM GUILTY AS CHARGED!

I can’t help it…the change in life that Jesus has brought about in me…I want as many people as possible to hear about it!  I want as many people as possible to have their lives changed.  I want as many people as possible to KNOW that they KNOW JESUS!  I just don’t see anywhere in Scripture where that is a bad thing.

Don’t EVER apologize for embracing the fact that God has called us to RECONCILE (not REVILE) the world!  (II Corinthians 5:16-21!)

    • #7 – Never Apologize For Saying “No” To What You KNOW You Need To Say “No” to!

One of the biggest frustrations I’ve ever had as a leader is when I commit “sins of obligation,” you know, when I do something because I feel like I have to rather than doing it because I truly feel led to do it because of the Holy Spirit’s leadership in my life.

Just because we have opportunities doesn’t mean we need to embrace them…because saying “yes” to everything often means we have to say “no” to the things that are REALLY important.

    All about the CHIPS!

DISCLAIMER: I should say up front that I have done no formal study nor have I conducted any type of survey or random phone calls, a.k.a. telemarketing on the following subject.

Having prefaced this blog with that statement let me say this…97.23376% of Americans enjoy potato chips – and that is a conservative estimate. With such a large percentage of Americans who enjoy potato chips, one would hope that the potato chip consumer would take the consumption of potato chips a little more serious. However, the sad truth is that many potato chip eaters fail to fully appreciate the tasty potential of such delectable treats. Oh no, most people look at chips as some sort of “meal filler”, something with which to pass the time or fill up any empty pockets of air in their stomach. Consequently, the attitude of “any ’ole chip will do” takes place. And that is unfortunate because the potato chip can be a meal maker or a meal breaker!

Allow me to give you some of my CHIP TIPS to help you ensure the best lunch/life ever:
    (In no particular order)

    01. SNACKABILITY – are you able to take your chips on the go? If you can put your chips in a backpack or coach purse then it is safe to say that your chip bag size has great snackability.

    02. SIZEABILITY – this is different from snackability, this is in regards to the Actual Size Of the Chip (a.k.a. – A.S.0.C.). Sizeability is important so that you can conveniently stuff your face with a sizeable amount of delicious potato chips! Here are some examples of chips with excellent sizeability: mini-Pringles, regular Pringles, and Frito’s corn chips.

    03. FLAVOROCITY – an incredibly important factor for an outstanding chip is the flavor. Now a’ days the chip selection is as wide and vast as the open seas or the never ending sky…which of course means, so are the flavors. Of course it ultimately depends on your personal taste palate, but you really want to look for something that will make you say one of the following phrases: “Wow, it”s like a party in my mouth!” Or, “Yeee hawwww, that’s a kick in the pants!” Or, “hay el dolor en la garganta!” Or, “I enjoy consuming this food item.” Or, “Mmmmmm.”

    04. TEXTURFICATION – the texture of a chip can be just as important as any other part of your chip chompin’ experience. You don’t want something too brittle, but you definitely don’t want a chip that seems unbreakable either. You want a chip that is just right…a perfect blend of teeth resistance and crunchtasticness. On a side note…other chip connoisseurs refer to this “perfection” as crunchability.

Well, there ya have it. Four easy Chip Tips that will help you on your quest for the best possible chip eating experience. I will leave you with my top three favorite chips:

    01. Miss Vickie’s Jalapeño chips – high in flavorocity and texturfication

    02. Nacho Cheese Doritos – high in flavorocity; low in sizeability

    03. Tostitos Bite Size Gold – perfect combo of sizeability and texturfication; great dipability

Until next time…Chips Ahoy (not the cookies),

    Christmas break road trip tips!

Alright, I am guessing it is safe to assume that everyone reading this blog has been on a road trip at one point or another. In my 27 years, I have been a part of a large number of road trips- both solo and as a part of a larger group (plus a couple of caravans). In fact, I’m ready for a road trip.. Being that Christmas break is coming up…It won’t be long till it’s off to grandmas house, ya know… over the hills and threw the woods to grandmothers house we go… I thought this may be a good time to discuss some of the finer points of making your road trip one to remember.

    01. Final Destination

As obvious as it may seem, the proper selection of your final destination is vital. I don’t know if you can count taking a road trip to Inola, OK as a win. Set your sights high when planning. Your destination doesn’t necessarily have to be exotic, but you should consider big cities, maybe someplace with a beach or perhaps mountains. or even grandmas house with awesome food!

    02. Your Posse

Do not blow this one. Who you decide to roll with could very well make or break your road trip. Consider the dynamic of the group you will be road-tripping with, while keeping a few points in mind.

    • 1. you need a good navigator/co-pilot. This person should be steady, reliable and an innovator. Oh, and of course they must posses a natural awareness of direction. As much fun as life on the road can be, there are few things worse than wasting time cos of a missed exit. It’s awkward for everyone involved.
    • 2. avoid people with TBS. Tiny Bladder Syndrome. There’s nothing more frustrating than someone forcing a bathroom break when you are in the driving groove. Don’t let their flow interrupt yours.
    • 3. make sure you have at least one person who you can rely on to bring some life to the trip. You want someone who is a good conversationalist and who will still be right there with you when you are settled in for the long haul.

    03. Soundtrack

What would a road trip be without music? Before your trip, get your music collection together. Obviously, the time you must spend on this is directly proportional to the time you will be spending in the car. Lean towards high-energy songs and throw in several that will get everyone singing. Watch for a theme song to emerge. This is usually one that gets everyone in the car to react. Also, be sure to build a power set. When you are pushing 500+ miles, you will need a boost.

    04. Snack Attack

This one is easy: you need something chocolate (but not too much), something crunchy (branch out from chips- maybe give wheat thins a whirl), something sweet (red vines) and something sour (sour gummy worms). Get treats that will stimulate the palette and give you energy to keep going. However, you must stick to the basics. A road trip is not the time to be off exploring the periphery of the food families (this includes ethnic foods). You can’t afford to run the risk of unknown side effects. Do it for the sake of everyone else in the car.

    05. The Running Joke.

On your trip you’ve got to have a good joke to refer back to throughout the duration. Don’t force this- let it develop naturally during the course of your journey. When it hits, it will be obvious to everyone involved. It really is a magical thing. A good joke will last for the entire trip. A great joke will last for years to come. Think of it as a free souvenir. I still have jokes from road trips in the early 90’s. You know, from before when some of you were even born. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

I hope these help you the next time you take it to the streets. I wish you great success. and merry christmas!

    Sell-out?

“So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.

16 The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters (called the Praetorium) and called out the entire regiment. 17 They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head. 18 Then they saluted him and taunted, ‘Hail! King of the Jews!’ 19 And they struck him on the head with a reed stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship. 20 When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.” v.15-23

When you look at Jesus life, what he taught, how he lived, who he poured himself in to, and the many miracles he performed, it is shocking that he would die the way he did.  As Jesus stiood before Pilate, the crowd and the Pharisees yelled “Crucify Him!” Crucifixtion was the Roman penalty for rebellion.  Only slaves and non-Romans could be crucified.  Pilate feeling the pressure already gives in to the crowds demands and ordered Jesus to be flogged and crucified.

But what happened to all the people Jesus had impacted, where were the Disciples, and the crowds that welcomed Him just a couple of days earlier?  In a matter of 24 hours several people had sold Jesus for numerous reasons.

    • Judas – Sold Out Jesus for 30 gold coins.  Why, we can only speculate.  One thought is that he wantd to force Jesus in to the role of Ruler King the people thought the Messiah would be.
    • The Pharisees – Sold Out Jesus because of Pride and Jealousy.  They had tried to trick Jesus several times and were tiered of Him making them look like fools.
    • Pilate – Sold Out Jesus for Political Gain.  Knowing that he was already in the hot seat, he didn’t want to cause a riot that would affect his advancement in the Roman Government.  So he gave into the crowd even when he saw the real issue in the Pharisees jealousy.
    • The Disciples – Sold Out Jesus because of fear.  Even though they were the closest to Him and knew Him the best, they were fearful that they may be next.
    • The Crowds – Sold Out Jesus to Popularity.  The crowds were there when it benefited them.  It’s easy to be swayed by the opinions of others and the crowd that had gathered this day was pretty insistent on Jesus being crucified.
    • You and Me – Sell out Jesus to _______________________.

Lets be honest, there are areas in our life that we sell Jesus out also.  It can range from a variety of things to only a couple of things.  Take some time today to think of the things that cause you to sell Jesus out.  If we never identify them we aren’t able to confess them and ask God for help.

    PURSUING EXCELLENCE

I was thinking this morning as I did my quite time, how amazing life is. To think where I was at just a few short years ago to where I’m at now! Thank God for the life that he has given to me… Even tho this life has had it share of heartache, pain, sweat and tears it’s all been worth it! this morning as I sit here in my office on this sunny but cold day in north GA. I have to say the longer I serve him the sweeter it becomes. He has blessed me in so many ways one being my wife. She is not only smoking hot–she is the one person on this earth I can depend on. It’s not easy being a pastor’s wife, but God has given her an amazing ability to adapt very well, she is stable, Godly and knows who she is in Christ and that makes her so much more beauty to me! Also, my son that will be here in 6 weeks! I pray that God saves him one day. that he will grow to become a man of character and integrity.. I’m so grateful for the calling on my life. To think I almost threw it away because of what some preacher told me back some years ago. I want to say this. You can’t run from the call of God on your life! To be in the center of  His will is the most blessed, peaceful, best place to be. I thank God for the opportunity to work as a minister of the gospel! As I’m reading this passage this morning some things pop out at me here they are….Excellence does”t just happen. It’s something that we have to strive for, work for, and sacrifice for to achieve. And it’s what God asks of us in every area of our lives. Why? Because it glorifies Him.
    1. Be a Winner. I Corinthians 9:24 You’ve all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win. All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You’re after one that’s gold eternally
    2. Do Your Best. II Timothy 2:15 Concentrate on doing your best for God, work you won’t be ashamed of, laying out the truth plain and simple

Pursue Excellence daily. God knows your heart. is it always easy? NO is it sometimes hard? YES. Does God reward the faithful YES! So KEEP ON GOING! don’t quit you can do it!
